“I didn't really know much about this artist until I heard a song on a local Tucson station. This album is really pretty incredible. It has some pretty great straightforward songwriting, kind of a little bit reminiscent of the 90s but also digs into some new metal sounds, and it was one of my favorite records from 2022.”
Squeeze
On "Squeeze," the soundscape is a rich tapestry of textured layers, blending ethereal synths with raw, organic instrumentation. The album opens with “Skin,” where delicate piano lines intertwine with haunting vocal harmonies, setting a reflective tone that permeates the record. The production choices are notably minimalist yet impactful, allowing each sound to resonate fully, whether it’s the shimmering guitars in “The World” or the punchy drum patterns in “Not a Hero.” SASAMI navigates a diverse range of tempos, moving fluidly from the slow-burning intensity of “Sorry” to the more upbeat, almost playful “Make It Right.” This juxtaposition enhances the emotional depth of the album, as she explores themes of vulnerability and empowerment with both grace and grit. What distinguishes "Squeeze" within the alternative genre is its ability to seamlessly blend elements of pop, rock, and experimental sounds, making it feel both contemporary and timeless. The album is imbued with a sense of raw honesty that resonates deeply, drawing on personal experiences while tapping into broader cultural narratives. Key moments, such as the cathartic climax in “Callous,” showcase SASAMI’s adeptness at balancing introspection with powerful crescendos, leaving listeners with a sense of catharsis. As a whole, "Squeeze" reflects the evolution of alternative music in the early 2020s, capturing a moment where emotional authenticity reigns supreme amidst a landscape often dominated by superficiality.
