“Most people reference older Radiohead records, and I'm a fan of all of them but there was something that stood out about this record. I loved the drum production on it and just the opening track '15 Step.' The relentless kind of drum beat, the way it kicks in, the melodies, I mean... 'House of Cards,' 'Weird Fishes,' there's just so many incredible songs. This is a highly emotional record. That one really stands out for me.”
In Rainbows
Emerging from a period of experimentation and introspection, this 2007 album marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of alternative rock. The sound is rich and layered, intertwining electronic elements with traditional rock instrumentation. You’ll find intricate guitar work, courtesy of Jonny Greenwood, that oscillates between delicate arpeggios and more abrasive textures, often accompanied by a hauntingly melodic piano. The rhythm section, anchored by Colin Greenwood’s bass and Phil Selway’s understated drumming, creates a fluid foundation, allowing the music to ebb and flow with a dreamlike quality. The production, helmed by the band themselves, embraces a lo-fi aesthetic that contrasts with the lush arrangements, lending an intimate feel to tracks like "Nude" and "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi." The use of unconventional time signatures and ambient soundscapes adds to the album’s distinctive character, pushing the boundaries of what alternative rock can encompass. Lyrically, the themes navigate love, anxiety, and existential dread, articulated through Thom Yorke's haunting vocals that convey vulnerability and urgency. Moments like the climactic build of "All I Need" encapsulate this emotional depth, reminding listeners of the fragility of human connection. Culturally, the album arrives during a time of digital upheaval, reflecting a growing disillusionment with modern life, which resonates in its experimental approach. This album, released as a pay-what-you-want download, also challenges conventional music distribution, reinforcing Radiohead’s role as innovators in both sound and business model.
“Why don't I just pair it with In Rainbows, which we just don't own and that seemed like a big gap.”
