R.E.M. — Out of Time

Out of Time

R.E.M.

Released in 1991, this remastered version serves as a vivid reminder of R.E.M.'s evolution within the alternative rock landscape of the early '90s. The album blends jangly guitars, driving rhythms, and Michael Stipe's distinctive vocal delivery, creating an atmospheric sound that's both introspective and expansive. The production, handled by Scott Litt, embraces a polished clarity that enhances the intricate layers of the instrumentation, allowing each element—be it the shimmering guitar lines or the steady bass grooves—to shine. Tracks like “Losing My Religion” encapsulate the album's essence with its haunting mandolin riff and lyrical ambivalence, while “Shiny Happy People” provides a contrasting burst of upbeat tempo and infectious melodies. The juxtaposition of darker themes and bright instrumentals is a hallmark of this record, reflecting the band's deft ability to balance melancholy and hope. This era in R.E.M.'s career marks a transition, as they shift from the more raw sound of their earlier work to a more refined style without sacrificing authenticity. The album captures a significant cultural moment in the early '90s, when alternative rock began to seep into mainstream consciousness, influencing countless bands that followed. The remastering brings new life to the sonic textures, enhancing the clarity of the arrangements and providing a fresh listening experience for both long-time fans and newcomers. The record remains a significant chapter in R.E.M.'s discography, showcasing their artistic growth and the broader evolution of alternative music during that period.

“I got 'Out of Time' because this was my favorite album when I was in seventh grade. That's me in the corner, that's me in the spotlight, losing my religion. I actually had it on cassette tape and my mom and I took a road trip when we moved from Texas to Alaska in seventh grade, and there were only three cassettes that she would listen to that I also would listen to, and this was one of them.”
