Deftones — White Pony

White Pony

Deftones
Hard Rock 2000

Released in 2000, this album represents a significant evolution in the sound of hard rock, blending elements of metal, shoegaze, and alternative rock. The production is notable for its atmospheric qualities, driven by the textured layers created through intricate guitar work and a balanced mix of aggressive and ethereal vocals. The opening track, "Feiticeira," sets the tone with its juxtaposition of heavy, distorted riffs and haunting melodies, a hallmark of the band’s approach throughout the album. The rhythm section, anchored by Abe Cunningham's dynamic drumming and Chi Cheng's fluid bass lines, gives the songs a propulsive energy while allowing moments of spaciousness, such as in "Digital Bath." The interplay between Stephen Carpenter's heavy guitar riffs and Chino Moreno's versatile vocal delivery ranges from whispering intimacy to raw, soaring intensity. This contrasts with the more subdued, atmospheric passages that invite the listener into a darker, dreamlike landscape. Lyrically, the album explores themes of alienation, desire, and introspection, resonating with the angst of a generation at the turn of the millennium. The production choices, including the use of ambient soundscapes and layered harmonies, contribute to an immersive listening experience that sets it apart from contemporaries in the nu-metal scene. Key tracks like "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)" and "Change (In the House of Flies)" showcase the band's ability to create emotionally charged music that oscillates between heaviness and vulnerability, making this record a standout in the Deftones' discography and in the broader landscape of alternative music at the time.

“I would say my favorite song probably digital birth. I think the drums on there and the warmth and how relentless the instruments are but then how smoothing Chino's voice is and that marriage is something that's always really moved me.”

“I spent a lot of time doing Vance Warp Tour, Anger Management, stuff with Lincoln Park, stuff with the Executioners, Lint Biscuit, doing, you know, I did a lot of like cross collaborations with rock bands, and I've also toured with a lot of rock bands. So, this was one of my favorite albums from the Deftones. Back to School was like my favorite song on here.”

“Deftones, White Pony. Um, also kind of a soundtrack to my... I had been into a lot of new metal and stuff from like when I was a kid. Deftones was the one that like carried through into like teenage years and stuff. It's another album I listen to now and I'm like it almost hurts to listen to it. Just takes me right back there to being such a fragile human.”
