“Deftones 'Around the Fur.' Growing up, they were one of my favorite bands and one of the few bands that I liked when I was 11 that I still really identify with in a big way. The first album is good too, but this is the classic probably.”
Around the Fur
Released in 1997, this album captures the essence of the hard rock and alternative metal scenes of the time, characterized by its dynamic interplay of heavy instrumentation and ethereal melodies. The opener, “My Own Summer (Shove It),” sets the tone with its sludgy guitar riffs and Chino Moreno’s haunting vocals, which oscillate between whispers and anguished screams. The production, helmed by Terry Date, strikes a careful balance that allows for both rawness and polish, giving the guitars a thick, layered texture while keeping the rhythm section tight and propulsive. Throughout the album, tracks like "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)" showcase a unique blend of atmospheric soundscapes and driving beats, creating a sense of both urgency and introspection. The interlude piece “Lhabia” injects a brief moment of experimental sound, offering a contrast to the more straightforward hard rock tracks. Distinct within its genre, the album merges elements of shoegaze and post-punk with heavy metal influences, paving the way for a more atmospheric approach to hard rock. This fusion resonates with the era's burgeoning alternative scene, marked by a desire to explore emotional depth and sonic complexity. Key moments, such as the climactic build-up in "Change (In the House of Flies)," reveal the band's ability to manipulate tension and release, inviting listeners to experience a range of emotions. Overall, this album remains a significant representation of the sound and spirit of the late '90s, reflecting a cultural moment where heavy music began to embrace more nuanced textures.
“Uh, my favorite song on this record is Be Quiet and Drive. Obviously, I remember being in Oxford with my band and just getting really into Deftones, and the acoustic version of Be Quiet and Drive is also really good and you should go listen to it. Oh my god, just like yeah, the cover's cool as hell as well.”
