“These two albums 'Spirit of Eden' and 'Laughing Stock' I guess, kind of like 'Kid A' and 'Amnesiac' in terms of the same tones they have throughout the two albums.”
Laughing Stock
Emerging from the post-rock landscape of the early '90s, this album reflects a deep exploration of sound and emotion, weaving together elements of rock, jazz, and ambient music. The textures are rich and layered, characterized by the use of unconventional instrumentation, including lush string arrangements and dissonant horn sections that create an atmospheric, almost surreal quality. The production, overseen by the band and engineer Tim Friese-Greene, embraces a sparse and organic sound, allowing each element to breathe. Vocals are delivered with a haunting intensity, blending poetry and introspection, further enhancing the album's ethereal ambiance. Tracks like "After the Flood" exemplify a gradual build-up, where silence and space play as crucial roles as the instrumentation itself. The rhythmic pulse is often understated, favoring a slow, meditative tempo that draws listeners into a contemplative state. "New Grass" stands out with its intricate melodic lines and a sense of urgency that contrasts with the album's overall tranquil nature. Released at a time when alternative rock was beginning to take shape, this work diverges from the mainstream trends of its era, opting instead for a more avant-garde approach. It captures a feeling of uncertainty and introspection that resonates deeply within the cultural climate of the early '90s, reflecting a shift toward more experimental sounds. This album is not merely listened to; it is experienced, inviting listeners to engage with its complex emotional landscape and sonic nuances.
“At the end, the last two records, Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock, it all kind of melts and dissolves and like the songs are beautiful but it's like they're just performances and parts of performances coming in and going out. I think they recorded it over like a period of a year and brought in dozens and dozens of musicians just to jam with it without really knowing what the song was.”
