Le Mystère des voix bulgares — Le mystere des voix bulgares, vol. 3

Le mystere des voix bulgares, vol. 3

Le Mystère des voix bulgares
Classical 1990

The third volume in the series showcases the hauntingly beautiful vocal traditions of Bulgaria, capturing a sound that is both ethereal and deeply rooted in folk heritage. The album features a choir of women whose harmonies create a rich tapestry of sound, often employing dissonant intervals and intricate melodies that evoke the landscape of rural Bulgaria. Each track is imbued with a sense of mystique, as if the voices are communicating ancient stories and emotions. Musically, the album blends traditional folk elements with a contemporary sensibility, allowing the rawness of the choir's vocal techniques to shine. The use of minimal instrumentation, often limited to traditional Bulgarian instruments like the gaida (a type of bagpipe) and the tambura, allows the focus to remain on the voices. The production choices enhance the natural resonance of the choir, creating an immersive listening experience that transports the audience into the heart of Bulgarian culture. Key tracks such as "Dido" and "Zapev" illustrate the group's ability to convey a wide emotional range, from the celebratory to the mournful. The album is significant not only for its artistic merit but also for its role in reviving interest in Bulgarian choral music during the late 20th century, a time when global audiences were increasingly eager to explore diverse musical traditions. As a document of cultural heritage, "Le mystère des voix bulgares, vol. 3" serves as both an introduction to the richness of Bulgarian vocal music and a profound listening experience that resonates with the listener's sense of place and history.

“When I was a kid in Bulgaria, there was a whole lot of folk music, you know, communist country sort of celebrating sort of national stuff and I was really averse to it. Apart from the Bulgarian throat singers who recorded with Kate Bush, this was a record that put out. So this is kind of how they became famous and then Kate Bush kind of, you know, approached them and started recording with them.”
