“for Plex I'm going to get him Raymond Scott the Manhattan Research. They made all of this great electronic music for advertising in the '50s, '60s, and '70s. It has a lot of electronic sounds but it's really cool and it's really informative and I think he will dig.”
Manhattan Research Inc.
With a blend of whimsical melodies and experimental textures, this album captures the innovative spirit of Raymond Scott, a pioneer of electronic music. Originally recorded in the 1960s, the tracks are reimagined and released by Basta in 2000, showcasing Scott's forward-thinking approach to sound. The album features a palette of synthetic tones, intricate rhythms, and playful arrangements that evoke a sense of both nostalgia and futurism. The instrumentation includes a range of early synthesizers, tape manipulation, and orchestral elements, all woven together with a keen attention to detail. The opening track, “The Rhythm Modulator,” sets the tone with its syncopated beats and rich layers of electronic bleeps, creating an engaging auditory landscape. “The Toy Trumpet,” another standout, juxtaposes traditional melodies with avant-garde electronic sounds, illustrating Scott's unique ability to bridge genres. The production choices on this album reflect a time when electronic music was still exploring its identity, and Scott’s work resonates as a precursor to many contemporary electronic artists. His influence extends beyond mere sound, as he incorporates elements of humor and playfulness, evident in tracks like “War Dance,” where the tempo shifts and quirky sound effects evoke a sense of joyful experimentation. "Manhattan Research Inc." serves as a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era of electronic exploration, providing listeners with a rich auditory experience that remains distinct within the genre. It invites both seasoned enthusiasts and new listeners to appreciate the artistry of one of electronic music's early visionaries.
“This record right here, 'Manhattan Research,' this compilation by this brother Raymond Scott is pretty insane. Raymond Scott was a jazz pianist and he was a little outside the box. Created a lot of commercials, but instead of just using the typical orchestras or the typical other organic instruments, he decided to fully invest himself in these new things called synthesizers.”
