“I enjoy this album, one of the best Police albums ever.”
Reggatta De Blanc
The second studio album from the English rock band showcases a seamless blend of reggae rhythms with rock sensibilities, creating a sound that is both accessible and innovative. The remastered 2003 version of this 1979 release enhances the crispness of the instrumentation, allowing the intricate guitar work of Andy Summers and the robust bass lines of Sting to shine through with clarity. The production by Nigel Gray emphasizes a minimalistic approach, utilizing space and echo to evoke a sense of atmosphere that complements the band’s lyrical introspection. The album's tempo varies from the laid-back grooves of “Walking on the Moon” to the more frenetic energy of tracks like “Message in a Bottle.” The interplay between Stewart Copeland’s dynamic drumming and Summers’ jangly guitar creates an engaging texture that is distinctly their own, marking an evolution within the rock genre during a time when punk and new wave were gaining traction. Notably, “The Bed's Too Big Without You” stands out with its haunting melody and poignant lyrics, reflecting themes of isolation and longing, while “Bring on the Night” showcases their ability to fuse genres effortlessly. The album encapsulates a moment in the late '70s when punk's raw energy began to merge with more melodic, reggae-influenced sounds, setting the stage for the genre's future explorations. Each track invites the listener into The Police's world, rich with emotion and rhythmic complexity, making it a significant entry in their discography.
“I remember my brother buying this when it came out and I must have been about 7 years old and him and all his mates had dyed all their hair blonde... you kind of go through The Police and they become annoying after a while and then you can laugh at Sting doing all his mock kind of reggae singing and stuff. But then you go back to the record and you kind of listen to the energy of it and just how absolutely crazily fast they're playing on there.”
